HISTORY OF THE DAY
According to Oleg Loginov
THE INGALLS SHOOTOUT
William «Bill» Doolin (1858-1896) was the leader of the famous Old West gang «Wild Bunch», consisting of two dozen criminals. They operated in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas. Banks and trains were robbed. He was chased by famous sheriffs and marshals of that time (Bill Tilghman, Chris Madsen and Thomas Chert) and «bounty hunters». There was even a so-called «Ingalls Battle», when 14 law enforcement officers participated in a shootout with the Wild Bunch gang.
Andy Thomas. «A fight in Ingalls»
On the morning of September 1, 1893, two covered wagons entered Ingalls from opposite sides. Thirteen assistant marshals from Guthrie and Stillwater, under the direction of Marshal John Hickson, were hiding inside the vans. They intended to detain Dulin’s gang. Soon the guards found out that the whole gang had gathered in the saloon: Doolin, Dalton, Newcomb, «Red Deer» Whiteman, Tulsa Jack and «Dynamite» Jack. But it was not possible to take her by surprise.
One of the lawyers Dick Speed noticed a suspicious man leading a horse down the street. It was a member of the Bitter Creek Newcomb gang. And he also saw Aids holding a Winchester in his hands. Speed fired first. The bullet hit Newcomb’s rifle and ricocheted into his leg. Overcoming the pain, the bandit fired back, but then decided it was best to retreat. He jumped into the saddle and rode out of the city. Speed jumped out into the middle of the street and began to aim at the retreating bandit’s back, but at that moment a bullet hit him in the shoulder.
The shots were fired from the second floor located opposite the hotel. Arkansas Tom’s figure flashed through the window. Speed tried to run away, but Tom finished him off with the next shot.
After that, gunfire began from both sides. Unfortunately, it was not without accidental victims. A resident of the city named Del Simmons was shot by bandits, and another citizen was struck by the bullets of the lawyers when, frightened by the shooting, he jumped out of the saloon. They took him for a bandit.

The bandits understood that they could not hold out for long, and therefore decided to take a chance. While Arkansas Tom was covering them with fire from above, they jumped out through a side door and ran to the stable where their horses were standing. Tom didn’t let the lawyers stop them by putting two bullets in Tom Hueston. The bandits mounted their horses and, breaking into groups, simultaneously jumped out of two stable gates. The lawyers opened a frenzied shooting and knocked out the horse under Dalton, but Bill jumped on the horse behind Dynamite Dick. All this time Arkansas Tom was covering for his friends from the hotel. His next victim was Officer Shadley. But the bandits were not without losses. The bullet pierced Dynamite’s neck, he collapsed to the ground, but his comrades did not abandon him. They hoisted Dynamite onto the horse and sped away. However, they left Arkansas Tom alone in the city. He desperately fought back for several hours. 172 holes were later counted in the walls of the saloon.
Roy Dougherty, nicknamed «Arkansas Tom»
Dr. Pickering acted as a negotiator who went to him with an offer of surrender. And he later said that Arkansas wilted before his eyes when he found out that his comrades had abandoned him. After that, Tom surrendered on the condition that he would not be lynched immediately. He was later sentenced to 50 years, but pardoned after 17 years. When he was free, he started acting in films, but then he took up his old ways and was shot. And the shootout in Ingalls has long been an epic legend of the Wild West.
