THE ASSASSINATION OF WILLIAM MCKINLEY
William McKinley Jr. is the 25th President of the United States, and the last to hold such a high post who participated in the Civil War. During the conflict between the Southerners and the Northerners, he was a major (temporary rank for the period of hostilities) of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. During his reign, the United States won the war against Spain and established the protectorate of Cuba, then Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. He also annexed Hawaii, which received the status of a «self-governing territory».
According to historians, it was under McKinley that the United States became a world power, and his rule is characterized as the beginning of a «new imperialism». McKinley launched an expansion into the former Spanish colonies, in the sphere of influence of the United States under him were: Cuba, the Philippines, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico. This earned him the hatred of the anarchists.
On September 6, 1901, 57-year-old William McKinley delivered a welcoming speech at the opening of the Pan-American Trade and Industrial Exhibition in Buffalo (New York). And when, after his speech, he headed down the central alley to one of the pavilions, Leon Czolgosz, a Polish anarchist, approached him, as if wanting to shake hands with the president. But in the Pole’s hand there was a pistol wrapped in a handkerchief. He managed to lay in McKinley twice before he was disarmed and pinned to the ground.
One bullet hit the president’s chest, and the other pierced his stomach and got stuck in the muscles of his back. The president was transported to the hospital at the exhibition, where an urgent operation had to be performed by a gynecologist who could not remove the bullet from the abdominal cavity. On September 14, McKinley died, becoming the third US president to be assassinated in office.
Leon Czolgosz was convicted and sentenced to death by electric chair. In the last word , the terrorist said: «I killed the president because he was the enemy of all good working people. I don’t regret my crime.» On October 29, 1901, Leon Czolgosz was executed by electric chair.
The execution was turned into torture, periodically changing the tension. And then they also «mocked» his body by dissolving it in a bath with sulfuric acid. The coffin with his remains was covered with slaked lime and destroyed within 12 hours
After the death of McKinley, the security of US presidents was provided by a special secret service.
