HISTORY OF THE DAY

According to Oleg Loginov

on September 7

RAID ON A BANK IN NORTHFIELD

Since ancient times, the favorite pastime of American bandits has been bank robbery. It was a profitable occupation, but dangerous, as the legendary Jesse James and his guys once saw. For ten years, his gang robbed 11 banks, 7 trains, 3 stagecoaches, killing 16 people at the same time. Inspired by these successes, brothers Jesse and Frank James, three Younger, Charlie Pitts, Clell Miller and Bill Chadwell in 1876 decided to raid the richest bank in the Midwest, located in the city of Northfield (Minnesota). It was a long way to go, but a big jackpot was very tempting.

On September 7, 1876, they reached Northfield. Miller and Cole Younger stood at the entrance. Frank James, Jim Younger, and Chadwell were mounted at the end of the street, covering the escape route. And Jesse, along with John Younger and Pitts, entered the bank with pistols at the ready. The bank employees unquestioningly raised their hands in the air. But something happened on the street that was not included in the plans of the raiders.

Miller and Cole Younger, in order not to attract attention to themselves, started a distracting conversation with the townspeople about buying cattle. However, on the contrary, they aroused suspicion by the smell of alcohol. Local Lutherans did not touch alcohol and immediately recognized them as strangers. And then Clell Miller shooed the puny store owner, Allen, who wanted to go to the bank for money. He seemed to have obediently left, but suddenly raised a shout: «For weapons, guys! Our bank is being robbed!»

The residents of Northfield turned out to be conscious and combative. They jumped out of their homes with hard drives in their hands. Cole and Jim Younger tried to scare them, Miller, Frank James and Chadwell tried to scare them. They raced through the streets on horseback and fired into the air.

Hearing gunfire on the street, bank clerks, instead of being scared, became emboldened. The cashier refused to open the safe, saying that he did not have a key. And another bank employee rushed to the back door and managed to escape. Now the bandits are already nervous. They spat on the money without even checking the safe. And that one was open and the key to it was not required. Jesse and his companions jumped out of the bank, but at parting, one of them shot the brave cashier in the head.

And a deafening reception was waiting for them on the street. It seemed that the whole city was shooting. A shotgun blast hit Miller in the face on the way out. He stayed in the saddle, but blood flooded his eyes. However, Miller managed to shoot an unarmed bystander blindly.

A certain student Wheeler, who came to Northfield to visit his parents, showed special courage in repelling a bandit raid on a bank. Armed with his father’s shotgun, he fought desperately with America’s most famous gang. And it was he who took revenge on Miller for an innocent passerby, killing him to death. The ranks of the James gang were melting. The townspeople shot Bill Chadwell and severely wounded Bob Younger. Jesse ordered a retreat. The raiders, holding the reins in their teeth and firing from both sides with both hands, broke out of the inhospitable city without drinking salt.

Cole, Jim and Bob Younger after being detained

However, the townspeople rushed in pursuit and overtook the bandits near a wooded ravine along the Watonuan River. Charlie Pitts was killed here, and the wounded brothers Cole, Jim and Bob Younger were captured. All three were later sentenced to life imprisonment. And Jesse and Frank James then still managed to get away from the chase, according to legend, they rode away on the same horse. However, this unsuccessful raid actually became the end of their gang.

But the town of Norfield has its own reason for pride. And, so that people do not forget about him, since 1948, an annual celebration of the victory over the James Younger gang has been held in Northfield. The holiday is held every year on the weekend after Labor Day. On it, the audience is presented with a reconstruction of the legendary raid on the bank.
