HISTORY OF THE DAY

According to Oleg Loginov

October 5th

COFFEYVILLE ROBBERY

Robert Rennick Dalton better known as Bob Dalton, since 1891 led the Dalton gang, which included three of his brothers. They were known to rob banks, stagecoaches, and trains, mostly in Kansas and the Oklahoma Territory.

The leader of the fraternal gang, Bob Dalton, was an ambitious man. Remembering his mother’s stories about her nephews, he decided to repeat the achievement of the James-Younger gang and also rob two banks at the same time. In Coffeyville, two banks were located on opposite sides of the street: C.M. Condon & Company’s Bank and First National Bank. For some time the Dalton family lived in Coffeyville, and therefore the bandits knew that in this quiet town even representatives of the Law do not carry weapons, not to mention the townspeople. And yet, the place for the raid was clearly chosen unsuccessfully. Since the town was small, the bandit brothers were known and remembered there. Although they hedged themselves and put on false beards, but as it turned out, this did not save them.

Condon Bank

On October 5, 1882, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Bob, Grat and Emmett Dalton, Bill Power and Dick Broadwell drove into Coffeyville. And soon faced with the first surprise. The pavement was being repaired on the square, and the horse rack was removed. They had to «park» their horses about a hundred meters from the banks, in a narrow alley. Returning on foot to the square, the raiders split up. Bob and Emmett went to rob the First National Bank, and Grat, Broadwell and Power went to the Condon & Company bank.

And at that moment, despite the false beards, they were identified by the ice peddler Cyrus Lee. He rushed to the shop of Aisham, a dealer in weapons. And running in there, he shouted:

– The Daltons are robbing the bank!

Times were harsh. Aisham began distributing guns to the townspeople. Meanwhile, the cashier of Condon & Company Bank managed to detain the bandits by lying to them that the safe was locked and it would take time to unlock it. As a result, when the raiders, having collected money, began to go out, they were met on the street by an armed crowd of townspeople who, without further warning, opened fire on the bandits.

Bullet marks from the Dalton gang

To get to their horses, the Daltons and their comrades had to overcome about 100 meters under heavy fire. But they made a breakthrough. The raiders shot more accurately, but there were more citizens. The victims were among both opposing sides. Bandits shot dead three townspeople and Sheriff Carl Connelly. But they themselves were not without losses.

Grath collapsed to the ground before he had covered even a quarter of the way. He was mortally wounded. Power tried to hide from the hail of bullets in the store, but when he was banging on his door, he was shot in the back. Heavily wounded, Broadwell reached his horse and galloped out of town. He was found dead half a mile from the city, lying in a pool of his own blood.

The wounded Emmet Dalton also managed to get to the horses. He had a chance to ride away, but he saw his brother Bob fall. And turned the horse towards him. When Emmett leaned over so Bob could grab onto him, the dying man croaked:

– It’s useless.

Law enforcement officers hold the bodies of Bob and Grata Dalton after they were killed during an attempted bank robbery in Coffeyville, Kansas.

And at that moment, a charge from two shotgun barrels hit Emmett in the back, knocking him out of the saddle. The firefight, which lasted about ten minutes, subsided. The townspeople who came out of hiding wanted to lynch the unconscious Emmett, but the local doctor convinced them to show mercy. Moreover, in his opinion, the younger Dalton, who received two dozen wounds and so soon has to give his soul to God. But he, surprisingly, got out of the other world.

Coffeyville is now the most populous city in Montgomery County. However, there are few residents there. According to the 2020 census, the city’s population was 8826 people. And the raid of the Dalton gang still remains the most striking event in the history of Coffeyville. Every October, the city holds an annual celebration dedicated to the Dalton Raid. At Dalton Defenders Plaza and Death Alley, tourists can walk along the same path that the Daltons tried to rob two banks at the same time in 1892. Markers show the places where the bandits and four citizens of Coffeyville were killed. Bullet holes from the shootout are still visible on the north brick wall of Death Alley.
