HOLIDAYS WITH A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND
According to Oleg Loginov.
November 25 – ST. CATHERINE’S MEMORIAL DAY
A painting by Caravaggio. «Saint Catherine»
In the second half of the III century, Catherine, the future Saint Catherine, was born in Alexandria in a rich and noble family.
By the age of 17, the girl had received a brilliant Hellenic education and was distinguished by rare beauty and intelligence. Young men from the most famous families of the empire sought her hand, but none of them became her chosen one. She announced to her parents that she would only agree to marry someone who surpassed her in nobility, wealth, beauty and wisdom. And then her mother, who was a secret Christian, took her to the cave where the holy elder lived. And he told her that there was no such person on earth who would meet her requirements. For she has a suitable Heavenly Bridegroom in the image of the Lord God.
Jacopo di Cione. «The Mystical Betrothal of St. Catherine of Alexandria»
After Catherine passed the rite of baptism, the Lord looked at her kindly and gave her a ring, entrusting her to Himself. Soon Emperor Maximin himself arrived in Alexandria for a magnificent pagan festival (305-313). The cries of sacrificial animals, the smoke and stench of incessantly burning altars, the hubbub of the crowd on the lists filled Alexandria. Human sacrifices were also offered — confessors of Christ who did not depart from Him under torture were condemned to death in the fire.
Maximin tried to seduce Saint Catherine with wealth and fame. Having received an angry refusal, the emperor subjected the saint to cruel tortures – she was beaten with oxen veins, and then thrown into prison. The Empress Augusta, accompanied by the governor Porfiry with a detachment of soldiers, came to the dungeon. The Holy Martyr revealed the Christian teaching to those who came, and they believed.

In order to intimidate Catherine, the imperial nobleman Khursaden offered Maximin to make an unusual instrument for torture:
«Order four wooden wheels to be arranged on one axle, and various iron points to be nailed around them: let two wheels turn to the right, and two to the left; let a girl be tied in the middle of them, and the rotating wheels will crush her body. But first, let them only show these wheels to Catherine, so that, seeing them, she would be afraid of cruel torment, and would submit to your will; if after that she remains in the same stubbornness, then let her accept a painful death.
Fragment of the altar painting by Lucas Cranach art. «Execution of St. Catherine».
The next day, the martyr was brought back to the judgment seat. Under the threat of being wheeled, she was offered to sacrifice to the gods. But Catherine was not intimidated by the wheel construction for torture, and she went to her. But then she was saved by an Angel who descended from heaven, who crushed the instrument of torture. After seeing this miracle, Empress Augusta and courtier Porphyry with 200 soldiers announced in front of everyone that they also believed in Christ. The payback was terrible. They were all beheaded. And Maximin proposed marriage to Catherine again, but was rejected again. The emperor did not tolerate this and ordered her to be executed.

With a prayer to her Heavenly Bridegroom — Christ, Catherine herself put her head on the block under the executioner’s sword. According to legend, when he cut off her head, milk flowed out of the wound instead of blood.
Lucas Cranach Sr. «The Execution of St. Catherine». (1504)
After the execution of Saint Catherine, her body disappeared. According to legend, it was transferred by angels to Mount Sinai. In the VI century, by revelation, the honest head and the left hand of the holy martyr were found and transferred with honors to the newly created temple of Sinai.
She became the patron saint of libraries and librarians, as well as teachers, archivists and all those associated with wisdom and learning, as well as all those whose livelihood depends on wheels. The year of her martyrdom is traditionally considered to be 305 (the year of the major persecution of Christians under Galeria), and November 25 is revered in Catholicism as the day of her memory.
