October 6th
THE ASSASSINATION OF ANWAR SADAT
Mohammed Anwar al-Sadat is an Egyptian statesman and military figure; President of Egypt (1970-1981).
In 1973, in an environment of international isolation, Sadat launched a war against Israel (the Yom Kippur War); the extremely unsuccessful outcome of the operation forced Sadat to move closer to the United States and peace talks with Israel. Terrorist groups of Islamic fundamentalists «Al-Gamaa al-Islamiyya» and «Egyptian Islamic Jihad», united, organized the murder of Sadat to avenge his rapprochement with Israel
Despite the signing of a peace agreement with Israel, Egypt continued to celebrate with a military parade the anniversary of the successful offensive against Israeli positions in the Suez Canal zone in 1973. It was at this solemn ceremony on October 6, 1981, that the opponents of Egyptian President Mohammed Anwar al-Sadat decided to deal with him.

After receiving the report from the commander of the parade, the President of Egypt, accompanied by a group of dignitaries and senior army officers, ascended to the podium for the guests of honor. All eyes were on the sky, where the Air Force parade began. At this time, an artillery tractor, which was moving across the square in the formation of military equipment, suddenly braked. Senior Lieutenant of the 333rd Artillery Brigade Khaled Islambuli jumped out of the cockpit and threw a grenade into the podium, then opened fire with a heavy machine gun. Two more grenades were thrown by his accomplices from the back of the truck. Panic began. Sadat, who survived the grenade explosions, got up from his chair and said: «It can’t be!» But, standing up, he turned out to be a target for sniper Hussein Abbas Ali, who put several bullets into him with a Kalashnikov assault rifle.
In addition to Sadat, several senior military officers, a bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church, a photographer of the president and his valet were killed. Egyptian Vice President Hosni Mubarak and several foreign diplomats, including US military advisers, were injured. The presidential guard returned fire. The shootout lasted about five minutes, during which time three attackers and several spectators were killed.
Five assassins, including Lieutenant Istambuli, were disarmed and arrested. Engineer Mohammed Abdel Salam Farrag, who worked out the details of Sadat’s murder, was also arrested.
The investigation found out that the conspirators were part of the organization «Al-Jihad al-Jadid» («New Holy War»), which was headed by Farrag. The group aimed to implement the Islamic revolution, refuse to recognize the Jewish state and disrupt negotiations with Israel.
Khaled Al-Islambuli
On April 15, 1982, Farragh and two civilian conspirators were hanged, and the former military Islambuli and Abbas Ali were shot.
