HOLIDAYS WITH A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND
According to Oleg Loginov.
January 30 – INDIAN INDEPENDENCE FIGHTERS MEMORIAL DAY
India celebrates several days of martyrs at the national level. January 30 is one of such days dedicated to the assassination of the leader of the Indian national Liberation movement Mahatma Gandhi.
On January 30, 1948, in Delhi, Gandhi, popularly called Mahatma («The Great Soul»), as usual, went to evening prayer on the lawn in front of the house. Adherents of his teachings rushed to their idol, trying, according to ancient custom, to touch the feet of the Mahatma.
Taking advantage of the turmoil, Muslim extremist Nathuram Goji, editor of one of the provincial newspapers and a member of the armed detachment of the Hindu Mahasabha party, which opposed peace with Muslims, approached Gandhi. He bowed to the ground, ostensibly wanting, as a sign of respect and humility, to wipe the dust from his sandals, but then suddenly pulled out a revolver from his pocket and fired three times. The first bullet hit Gandhi in the stomach, the second went through the ribs, the third hit him in the chest and shot him in the lung. Gandhi only managed to say two words:
— Hey, Rama (Oh, my God)!..
And he died with a smile on his lips.
The investigation revealed that Natruharam Gojo was not alone. Eight extremists involved in Gandhi’s murder have been brought before the court. Goji and his assistant were sentenced to death by hanging. They were executed on November 15, 1949. The remaining conspirators received long prison sentences. But they say that the whole Goji family in Sangma also paid for the murder of Gandhi with their lives.
Every year on January 30, the President, Vice President, Prime Minister and Defense Minister of India gather at the Raj Ghat Memorial to lay a wreath in honor of Mahatma Gandhi. At 11 a.m., a two-minute silence is observed across the country in memory of the death of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation.
