HOLIDAYS WITH A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND
According to Oleg Loginov.
March 25 – THE DAY OF THE MEMORY OF THE MURDERER PHINEAS

Religious dogmas sometimes come into conflict with common sense. Imagine if a character appeared in Shakespeare’s tragedy «Romeo and Juliet» who would have killed this couple of lovers. He would have turned into one of the main literary villains forever. And in religious writings, it’s the opposite.
This is clearly seen in the example of the story of Phineas, the son of the second Jewish high priest Eleazar and the grandson of the first high priest Aaron, who is mentioned in the book of Exodus.
When the Israelites, brought out of Egypt by the prophet Moses, were already close to the Promised Land, their neighbors, the Moabites and Midianites, were allegedly filled with envy and fear. And allegedly the Moabites, through fornication, involved the Israelites in the idolatry of Baal-Pegoru. The Bible does not explain how people can be involved in anything through «fornication». But she tells how God punished the Jews for apostasy: he sent a pestilence on them, from which they died by the thousands.
During this pandemic, 24 thousand Israelis died. But against the background of universal grief and incessant grief, something romantic happened.
Jeremias van Winkle. «Phineas, who kills Zimri and the Midianite Haana»
Zamvria, the chief of the tribe of Simeon, and Haana, the daughter of the Midian chief, fell in love with each other. Theoretically, love could, if not reconcile the warring nations, then at least make them kinder to each other. But there was a man in the camp of the Children of Israel who hated the happiness of others. This man was the son and grandson of the high priests Phineas. He saw Zambrya and Haana walk past the tabernacle into the bedroom. Phineas took a spear, followed them into the bedroom and pierced both of them, Moreover, he struck the woman in her womb.
Lev Stepanenko. «Phineas kills libertines»
By this murder, Phineas so pleased God that he stopped striking the children of Israel. A pestilence. And God gave Phineas his gratitude and reward through Moses. He promised that the rank of high priest would remain in his family forever. So Phineas himself became the high priest after the death of his father.
There is no mention in Wikipedia of the veneration of Phineas by Catholics. But the Orthodox Church ranked him among the righteous saints. And commemorates him on March 25 (March 12, art. style).
